Modern unmanned aircraft in both the research and hobby fields often rely on hobby grade sensors for detection of airspeed and differential pressures. These sensors are used by both pilots and autopilot systems for control of the airframe, however the limits of these systems and their implementations are often not adequately understood. A full wind tunnel calibration of airframes with installed sensors would greatly reduce the errors before flight, but this is often not feasible due to size of aircraft or available facilities. This leaves most error correction to be done by flight testing which requires the risking of the airframe with potentially poor calibration values. Proper analysis of expected errors from probe type and placement are necessary to mitigate the risks to airspeed dependent airframes before they are able to gather the appropriate flight data for airspeed corrections. In addition to the standard error correction, a proper uncertainty analysis should be performed for all used sensors to ensure the feasibility of the measurements they are trying to obtain. This combination of analyses can be used to provide guidance for obtaining an airspeed measurement as well as other potential air data values. Angle of attack measurement is rarely available on small UAS systems, likely due to installation issues and lack of sensor accuracy over broad speed ranges. Similar to airspeed, general guidance and feasibility studies can be performed using expected errors and uncertainty analysis to determine the potential for using common airspeed sensors for the detection of an airframe's angle of attack.
