The purpose of this study was to examine the experience of African American adolescents who live in disadvantaged neighborhoods, and how they communicate and interact with each other using social media. Results from previous studies on social media documented both direct and indirect effects of adolescents' psychosocial development, social development, behaviors, and identity. Despite the rapid spread of digital and online experiences worldwide, African American adolescents continue to face significant barriers of accessing digital and communication technology. The research asked, "what is the experience of African American adolescents living in disadvantaged neighborhoods and their interactions and communications with each other using social media?" Data from eight adolescents were collected using semi-structured interviews. Generic qualitative inquiry was selected to investigate participants' reports about their subjective opinions, reflections of their experiences, and beliefs about the outside world. The result of the data analysis yielded the following themes: (1) Social media provides several pathways for communication for adolescents; (2) Adolescents receive ambiguous communications; (3) Adolescents experience personal growth from social media; (4) Adolescents increase their understanding of disadvantage. The participants experienced many incentives that influenced their reward systems, including receiving attention and reactions from peers on social media, seeking positive influences, socially exploring new peer and parasocial relationships, skill acquisition, and personal development.
