Since the French civil engineer "Louis Menard" introduced the pressuremeter device, researchers did not stop studying both the apparatus and its theory. There are at least five different methods of interpreting the results of field pressuremeter tests. Each of these methods yields different values of soil parameters when applied to the same pressuremeter test. A laboratory pressuremeter model device was designed and constructed to simulate the pressuremeter test. Artificially sedimented kaolinite samples were used in running the laboratory model tests. These samples were consolidated to different values of the maximum vertical pressure and with overconsolidation ratios ranging from 1 to 8. For comparison purposes, two sets of K(,o)-consolidated undrained triaxial tests: compression and extension were carried out in the same range of the maximum vertical pressure and overconsolidation ratio. The range of variation of the undrained shear strength values computed for the same tested samples by the different methods is very wide and increases with the increase of the overconsolidation ratio. A new method of interpreting the field test results is developed and presented. In this method, the effect of the vertical stress and the excess pore pressure are included when the undrained shear strength is computed. The results of the new method coincide with that of the triaxial test with maximum variation of (+OR-)5%. The procedure of "SHANSEP" method is modified for more practical application. The new procedure is based on identifying the stress history of the tested soil by running the pressuremeter field test. The advantages of the proposed procedure are presented and discussed in the manuscript.
