Polymer/Carbon Nanotube Thermoelectric Composites and Their Flexible Devices /Lirong Liang. - 1 electronic resource (184 pages)

With the capability of realizing direct heat-to-electricity conversion and combining respective merits of polymers and filler materials, polymer-based thermoelectric (TE) composites and their devices have attracted increasing attention. However, to meet the requirement of flexible/wearable applications, the preparation of high- performance TE materials and rational design of flexible TE devices still need to be further investigated. Herein, four types of polymer/carbon nanotube composites and their flexible TE devices (TEDs) are fabricated. The main contents are shown below.1) A flexible polypyrrole/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate)/single-walled carbon nanotubes (PPy/PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs) ternary composite film with unique layered morphology is fabricated with one-dimensional PPy as template, exhibiting a large power factor (PF) of 45 μW m-1 K-2 , that significantly higher than that of PPy/PEDOT:PSS binary nanowires.2) Due to the increased carrier concentration, the strong interfacial interaction and the unique layered structure, the resultant flexible PEDOT-tosylate/acidified- SWCNTs (PEDOT-Tos/a-SWCNTs) composite film reveals an extremely high electrical conductivity of 4731 S cm-1 and an optimal PF of 119 μWm-1 K-2 . Moreover, a flexible TED with in-plane mode is designed by connecting six composite films in series, generating a large output power of 579 nW at temperature difference (ΔT) of 60 K.3) Considering the large Seebeck coefficient (S) of inorganic Tellurium(Te) nanocrystal, the fabricated flexible PEDOT-Tos/Te/SWCNTs ternary nanocomposite films reveal high TE properties with PEDOT-Tos as structing agent. Subsequently, three types of spiral-like TEDs are designed and investigated, achieving the device-level stretchability, compressibility and wearability. These TEDs not only provide stable and large output performances, but can also generate electricity from the ΔT induced by human body, hot water and liquid nitrogen.4) By introducing the high electrochemical potential of redox couple into a flexible/stretchable composite hydrogel (polyacrylamide/a-SWCNTs), the resultant gel-state thermoelectrochemical cell (TEC) provides a large and stable S of 1.59mVK-1 via regulating redox reaction entropy. Combing the excellent TE property with the designed strain sensitivity (well-dispersed a-SWCNTs network in polyacrylamide matrix), this TEC is further designed as a self-powered strain sensor to monitor various human motions.These research works will promote the development and application of high-performance flexible polymer-based TE composites and their flexible TEDs.
