Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Louisville, 2007.
Curiosity has been regarded as the one of the major motivators of behaviors in many domains of human operation such as educational, occupational, and recreational areas (Reio, Petrosko, Wiswell & Thongsukmag, 2006). Curiosity has also been regarded as a meaningful motivator that influences sport fan behaviors (Park, Andrew & Mahony, in press; Park, Mahony & Greenwell, 2007). However, there has been no study measuring sport fan curiosity. The purpose of this study was to develop effective, reliable, and valid measurement scales for sport fan curiosity. Because no research has been done to understand the concept and role of curiosity as a possible motivator for various sport fan behaviors except Park et al. (in press) and Park et al. (2007), this study was largely based on psychology literature. Eighteen sport fan exploratory curiosity scale (SFECS) items and 24 sport fan specific curiosity scale (SFSCS) items were originally developed based on the literature reviews and experts' content validity. A total of 657 participants were recruited via paper and Internet surveys. Then the instruments were submitted to an exploratory factor analysis and other analyses in order to examine reliability and validity. The exploratory factor analysis indicated that three factors (Excitement, New Sport Events, Sport Facility) existed in the SFECS and three factors (Specific Information, General Information, Sport Facility Information) existed in the SFSCS. All these factors showed good reliability and validity. In order to confirm the construct of sport fan curiosity, a series of confirmatory factor analyses were performed and some items of the scales were deleted based on it. The final results showed that the SFECS with 10-items and the SFSCS with 11-items were overall reliable and valid structures. The SFECS and SFSCS seemed to successfully explain and predict various sport fan behaviors such as frequency of watching sporting games and events on TV, frequency of searching for sport information on the Internet, and intention to watch novel sports. Future research should be done in an effort to keep developing valid and reliable scales through further refinement processes and to extend beyond the scale development to and findings in various practical areas in a sport context.
