The current study centers primarily on cognitive aspects in spider fear. Cognitive biases are ways in which fearful information is maladaptively attended, interpreted and remembered. Research has suggested that cognitive biases underlie psychopathologies, generally in anxiety and particularly in spider phobia. Two significant biases are the focal point of our study; attention bias and expectancy bias. Attention bias is characterized by initial hyper-vigilance towards phobic stimuli. Expectancy bias is composed of encounter bias, an overestimation of encountering phobic-related stimuli, and consequence bias, an overestimation of harm due to such an encounter. Cognitive biases have been researched extensively at seldom but rarely assessed together. In our previous study, encounter bias was found to weaken attention bias to spiders. This indicated a potential way of addressing impairments in cognitive processing in spider fear and marked the way, in our study, to explore also altering consequence bias. Effects of consequence bias on attention bias and self-reported spider fear are yet unknown. Nonetheless studies found diminished consequence bias after treatment in some phobias. In the current study, both high and low spider fearful participants partook in a visual search array task and were asked to identify spiders or birds in an array of butterflies. This task allowed us to assess attention bias and was simultaneously considered an in-vitro exposure procedure. Thus, we also adopted a clinical viewpoint. In order to manipulate consequence bias, we exposed participants to different affectual spider contexts (negative, positive, neutral). In the negative context, participants read an informational text on a venomous and harmful spider and were exposed to disgustprovoking videos of spiders. We evoked fearful and disgust feelings in order to assess their cognitive manifestation. In the positive context, we aimed to reduce disgust response and assess its impact on cognition and fear. Participants were also exposed to an informative text (explaining spider harmlessness and environmental value) and to videos of "Lucas the Spider": a cutely cartoon-designed spider.

520 $a המחקר הנוכחי מתמקד בהיבטים קוגניטיביים בפחד מעכבישים. הטיות קוגניטיביות הן אופנים שבהם מידע מעורר-פחד מושך תשומת לב, מתפרש ונזכר בצורה לא מסתגלת. מחקרים הדגימו כי הטיות קוגניטיביות הנם ביסוד התשתית של פסיכופתולוגיות, בחרדה באופן כללי ובייחוד בפוביה מעכבישים. שתי הטיות נמצאות בבסיס מחקר זה; הטיית קשב והטיית ציפייה. הטיית קשב מאופיינת בדריכות יתר מוקדמת לעבר גירויים פוביים. הטיית ציפייה מורכבת מהטיית מפגש, הערכת יתר לסבירות להיתקל בגירוי פובי, ומהטיית תוצאה, הערכת יתר לסיכוי להינזק בעקבות מפגש שכזה. הטיות קשב נחקרו באופן מקיף, אך באופן כוללני ורק לעתים נדירות דרך פריזמה הבוחנת השפעות אינטראקטיביות הדדיות. במחקר קודם, נמצא כי הטיית מפגש החלישה את הטיית הקשב לעכבישים. ממצא זה הצביע על דרך פוטנציאלית להתייחס לשיבושים בפוביה מעכבישים ומינף אותנו, במחקרנו, לחקור גם השפעותיה של הטיית תוצאה. האפקט של הטיית תוצאה על הטיית קשב ועל דיווח עצמי של פחד מעכבישים טרם ידוע. עם זאת, מחקרים מצאו הפחתה של הטיית תוצאה כתוצאה מטיפול בפוביות מסוימות. במחקר הנוכחי, נבדקים עם פחד נמוך וגבוה מעכבישים לקחו חלק בפרוצדורת חיפוש ויזואלי והתבקשו למצוא עכבישים או ציפורים בתוך מטריצה של פרפרים. הפרוצדורה אפשרה מדידה של הטיית קשב וכן שימשה גם כחשיפה דיגיטלית לעכבישים. באופן זה אימצנו פרספקטיבה הנסמכת על הגישה הקוגניטיבית- התנהגותית. בכדי לבצע מניפולציה להטיית התוצאה, חשפנו נבדקים לעכבישים בקונטקסטים רגשיים שונים. בקונטקסט השלילי, נבדקים קראו טקסט אודות עכביש ארסי ומסוכן, ונחשפו לסרטונים מעוררי תגובת גועל. בכדי להפחית תגובות גועל ובהלה, בקונטקסט החיובי נבדקים נחשפו לטקסט אינפורמטיבי )המסביר כי לרב עכבישים אינם מזיקים וכי הם בעלי חשיבות סביבתית( ולסרטונים של "לוקאס העכביש", אנימציה מונפשת של עכביש חמוד. שבעים וחמישה אינדיבידואלים עם פחד נמוך מעכבישים השתתפו בניסוי 1 .ארבעים ושמונה אינדיבידואלים עם פחד גבוה מעכבישים השתתפו בניסוי 2 ,הזהה לניסוי 1 ,למעט הקונטקסט השלילי. שיערנו שעל ידי הפחתת אי-ודאות הטיית הקשב תפחת גם בקונטקסט השלילי וגם בחיובי. נוסף לכך, ציפינו למצוא אפקט דיפרנציאלי בקונטקסטים, כך שתהיה הפחתה רבה יותר של הטיית הקשב בקונטקסט החיובי. יתרה מזאת האמנו שקבוצות עם פחד נמוך ופחד גבוה מעכבישים יסתייעו מרמזים מתרימים שיגרמו לאפקט תאימות. מפרספקטיבה קלינית שערנו שפחד מעכבישים יגבר בקונטקסט השלילי ויפחת בחיובי. התוצאות הראו כי קיימת הטיית קשב כללית באינדיוידואלים עם פחד נמוך וגם עם פחד גבוה מעכבישים. עם זאת, באופן חשוב, התוצאות הצביעו על כך שהטיית קשב הינה ברת השפעה ושהיא תלוית-קונטקסט. הטיית קשב הייתה הכי חלשה בקונטקסט החיובי ואפקטים חזקים יותר שלה נמצאו בקונטקסט השלילי והניטרלי. לא רק זו, ציפיית מפגש השפיעה על קשב; זמני התגובה היו מהירים יותר במצבים בהם הייתה תאימות בין מטרה לרמז מאשר כשלא הייתה תאימות. באופן ספציפי, אפקטים של תאימות בין מטרות ציפור ועכביש היו שונים בקונטקסט השלילי, ממצא המשקף הגברה בהטיית הקשב. מצד שני, אפקטים של תאימות נמצאו כדומים בקונטקסט החיובי בפחד נמוך מה שמעיד על הפחתה בהטיית הקשב. התוצאות רומזות על פוטנציאל לאלסטיות וסתגלנות אנושית בנטייה לפחד ויכולת שליטה קוגניטיבית "מלמעלה-למטה". קלינית, מצאנו שבקבוצת הפחד הגבוה, לחשיפה עם קונטקסט חיובי היה אפקט מיטיב מיידי וארוך טווח גם על פחד מעכבישים וגם על ייצוג של רגישות מפני עכבישים. התוצאות מקנות אפשרות לדיון לגבי הבנות חדשות על שורשי המכניזמים הקוגניטיביים והקליניים בפחד מעכבישים.
