BackgroundMost cars traversing the road network for commuting purposes travel in a single occupant vehicle (SOV) mode, creating economic inefficiencies and adverse environmental impacts. Such impacts take the form of enhanced congestion, more vehicle-miles traveled (VMT), and increased use of land. This in turn creates excessive emissions, pollution, production loss, and resource depletion. SOV mode is associated with strong vehicle-use habit, which is considered hard to deter. It can be potentially reduced by offering more sustainable modes, one of which is not-for-profit ridesharing - the practice of several passengers sharing a ride in a private car. The sharing is performed free-of-charge, or by splitting the costs. In ridesharing, the trip serves the driver's destination, thus increasing Average Vehicle Occupancy (AVO), while lowering the number of system-wide trips. Unlike ridehailing which increases VMT, ridesharing creates benefits both for ridesharing participants and other road users.Ridesharing has been shown in some contexts to reduce the expensive drive-alone commuting habit and achieve more sustainable results - both in environmental and economic measures. However, beyond the existing kin circle, ridesharing has been hard to induce and harness. For more than a century, official actors had attempted to intervene and encourage ridesharing, especially at times of resource crisis. Lately, sharing-economy style initiatives, such as Blablacar or Waze Carpool, offer matchmaking platforms for ridesharing. While both official and commercial initiatives usually achieve only modest success, some self-organized ridesharing (SORS) had emerged in different contexts and drew participants in unprecedented rates.Initial literature review revealed that the research of SORS has been sparse and unsystematic, where only few relevant cases were investigated, and material's availability was partial and limited. Furthermore, these SORS occurrences have been treated as unrelated and contextually dependent, showing no consistent diffusion vectors. This narrow knowledge base offered little guidance as to the theoretical and practical aspects of such ridesharing forms, as they tend to stay hidden and hard to decipher. Consequently, the replicability and transferability of successful SORS ideas and practices beyond their initial context are limited. The presented PhD research attempts to bridge this gap by pursuing the research question: "how, why, when, and where does self-organized ridesharing succeed?". The main expected results of the research are better understanding of SORS evolution and dynamics, and suggested intervention tools for effectively increasing its uptake.MethodsThis study followed an iterative methodology composed of three stages. First, the existing literature concerning ridesharing and SORS was reviewed, along with similar subject areas, to create a descriptive conceptual framework (Paper I). The framework was then test trialed using a contemporary Israeli case. This case study allowed for in-depth analysis of successrelated processes and factors, which have never previously been explored. The research highlighted the framework's strength and limitations, and allowed its refinement according to the study results (Paper II). Finally, to address contextual dependencies, a multi-case study research was conducted, where cases from diverse cultures and contexts were explored comparatively (Paper III). This study allowed to differentiate between patterns and to analyze local drivers.
