In the spring of 1959, thousands of Tibetans fled China, crossing the border into Nepal. They were following the Dalai Lama into exile after years of living under an oppressive regime in Chinese-occupied Tibet. In the decades that followed, tens of thousands of Tibetans would leave their homeland, searching for a better life abroad. As Tibetans found new homes around the world, many stayed close to their homeland, seeking refuge and new opportunities in Nepal. One of the opportunities they were seeking was access to quality education. A generation later, Tibetans born in exile are still seeking the opportunity to become educated. Through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and an examination of artifacts, this study aims to explore how Tibetan refugees in Nepal construct their identities as educated persons through their experiences with differing systems of education, including formalized secular, monastic, and a hybrid of formal and monastic education. Additionally, it seeks to investigate how Tibetans perform their roles as educated persons within the refugee community in Kathmandu. By analyzing their experiences and perspectives, I seek to understand how Tibetan refugees have formulated their identities through their educational experiences, sociocultural contexts, and historical events, as well as how they perform and make sense of their identities as educated persons in the refugee community in Kathmandu.
