Bonaventure's Collations on the Hexaemeron, on the Ten Commandments, and on the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit have received much attention. His lengthy Commentary on the Gospel of Luke and his Commentary on the Gospel of John have also received reasonable attention for texts of medieval scriptural interpretation. His Collations on the Gospel of John, however, have been almost entirely overlooked. While it may be argued that the Collations on John do not fit in the same category as the other sets of Collations, nor do they present a proper scriptural commentary, they are worthy of consideration in both categories. This dissertation seeks to explain how the Collationes in Evangelium S. Ioannis relate to Bonaventure's other sets of Collations and his scriptural Commentaries. It accomplishes this task by considering the purpose of collations and medieval scriptural commentaries in general and the purpose of the Collations on John in particular. Furthermore, it demonstrates Bonaventure's use of the preaching techniques paired with the tools of scriptural interpretation available to him in his day by tracing the theme of unity as it is developed in the Collations on John. The dissertation then considers the way in which the Collations on John relate to Bonaventure's broader corpus. The dissertation concludes that the Collations on John are composed in the form of an outline for conferences and notes that serve as an addendum to Bonaventure's Commentary on the Gospel of John. While the tradition of collations in late thirteenth century Paris implies evening conferences to be preached publicly, the Collations on John were probably never{A0}publicly preached. Rather, they were offered as notes to students and preachers in aid of preaching themes gleaned from John's Gospel. They evince many of the concerns in the Franciscan Order of that time. Familiarity with the Collations on John adds to an appreciation of Bonaventure's skill in both preaching and scriptural interpretation. At the same time, his treatment of the theme of unity in the Collations demonstrates the consistency of Bonaventure's thought throughout his works. Bonaventure's reflections on the theme of unity offer much wisdom in a time fraught with divisions.
