This dissertation examines the unpardonable sin, blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, to defend Augustine's interpretation that the unpardonable sin is impenitence unto death. This defense takes an explicitly theological approach, intersecting Theology Proper, Christology, Hamartiology, and Soteriology with the unpardonable sin before returning to the relevant passages to arrive at the correct interpretation. Augustine's impenitence view is contrasted with the other common views regarding this sin: apostasy, abomination, and persistence. It is proposed that Augustine's impenitence view is the correct interpretation of these texts because it best coheres with the rest of Scripture and the Synoptic passages in context.
