How did the writer of Hebrews come to interpret Jesus's death as an atoning sacrifice in light of the Old Testament rejection of human sacrifice? This dissertation compares atoning sacrifice in the Old Testament, Maccabean martyr texts, and Hebrews. The comparison reveals that Hebrews interprets atoning death much like Maccabean martyr texts. This dissertation concludes that Maccabean martyr theology is a first-century background that helps explain the application of Old Testament cultic metaphors to Jesus's death in Hebrews.
