This dissertation aimed to examine gait and body composition mechanisms that attenuate vibrations during running, and the influence of age and running experience on shock attenuation. Study 1 examined the association of bone mineral density, bone content, fat mass, and lean mass within the lower extremity and pelvis to shock attenuation of 3-8 Hz (FB1), 9-20 Hz (FB2), 21-35 Hz (FB3), and 36-50 Hz (FB4) signals. Study 2 assessed the contribution of gait mechanics and study 3 assessed the role of age and experience in FB1-FB4 attenuation.Fifty-eight runners ran overground (3.35 m·s-1±5%) as motion capture and force plates recorded their gait mechanics. Inertial measurement units (IMU) at the distal tibia and low-back recorded shock attenuation along the axial and resultant directions. Body composition was assessed in thirty-eight runners using dual x-ray absorptiometry. Runners were classified as middle-aged (52.9±5.8 years-old), young (22.3±4.0 years-old), novice (running 1 year, 9-30 miles·week-1 ). IMU signals were transformed to the frequency domain using power spectral density then a transfer function of the low-back relative to the tibia quantified axial and resultant shock attenuation within FB1-FB4. Associations of gait mechanics, body composition, age, and running experience to axial and resultant shock attenuation in FB1-FB4 were tested using linear regression (p≤0.05).Overall, gait characteristics representative of a more compliant gait (e.g., sagittal ankle and knee flexion, range-of-motion, reduced joint stiffness) were associated with greater axial attenuation within FB1, FB2, and FB4 (p≤0.024), and resultant attenuation within FB1-FB4 (p≤0.045). An increase in lower extremity fat mass decreased axial attenuation within FB2-FB4 (p≤0.033). Being middle-aged or a novice runner was associated with less resultant and axial shock attenuation within FB1-FB4 (p≤0.017). These results indicate that middle-aged and novice runners may attenuate less shock due to their typically greater fat mass and less compliant gait than younger and more experienced runners.
