This dissertation examined phenomenologically the subjective experience of channeling for the source as well as for the channel. The literature review focused on psychological aspects of channeling, including mediumship. In interviews, nine white, Caucasian, experienced, conscious channels, along with their sources, described their inner experience of channeling. Phenomenological analysis procedures, as outlined by Giorgi and Wertz, extracted from interview data an underlying structure of channeling. The analysis for channels produced ten structural themes: perceiving the source in close relationship to oneself; perceiving oneself and the source as separate, autonomous beings; perceiving the source as nonphysical or non-human; experiencing oneself as being in control of staging the transmission; experiencing oneself as a receiver of information from the source; cooperating with the source in a working partnership; maintaining mental and emotional detachment from the channeled information; experiencing physical sensations related to the transmission; expressing the channeled information; having positive feelings about the experience. For the sources, nine structural themes were derived: feeling a close connection to the channel; perceiving oneself and the channel as separate, autonomous beings, adjusting one's vibrational frequency to communicate with the channel; transmitting information to and through the channel; cooperating with the channel in a team effort to achieve accurate transmission and presentation; monitoring and protecting the channel's body/mind; perceiving channeling as fulfilling a commitment previously made; experiencing channeling as a learning opportunity; having a positive outlook about channeling. Answers to additional questions, such as the identity and motives of the source, and channeling's effect on the lives of its participants, were compiled using content analysis. Structural themes revealed that channeling takes place in the context of a loving, yet non-ordinary relationship; it is intended to accomplish serious, ministerial activity; and it is performed by channel and source with a sense of dedication and joy.
