The ongoing identity crisis for Black men and masculine authenticity is often disputed by Gender Studies scholars, like bell hooks, who maintain that Black masculinity is influenced by white patriarchal masculinity. This concept is believed to have been linked to plantation patriarchy-where white masculine influences dominated and oppressed Black bodies during American chattel slavery. This emulation of whiteness is illustrated in early twentieth century African American literature, where Race Men like Douglass codified a monolithic distinction of Black masculinity as it pertains to achieving racial progress through education, the utilization of resources to obtain progress, and exhibiting courage in the fight for progress. Douglass' seminal text, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave, Written by Himself has given birth to hegemonic Black masculinity, and subsequent writers like Du Bois have contributed to the cultural discourse on Black masculinity in The Souls of Black Folks. Both texts are categorized in this study as Race Men texts. During the mid-twentieth century, other Black male authors like Richard Wright and James Baldwin contend with this traditional ideation of Black masculinity in Native Son, Eight Men, and Another Country. Additionally, Mk Asante's Buck: A Memoir also protests traditional Black masculinity and is subsequently categorized as Progressive Black Masculine texts. Black women writers like Pauline Hopkins, Ann Petry, and Toni Morrison also contest traditional Black masculinity, and their texts Contending Forces, The Street, and The Bluest Eye exhibit the violent consequences of Black men being forced to succumb to the white patriarchal influence on hegemonic Black masculinity.
