The purpose of this study was to examine contemporary South Korean parents' views of gender and gender-socialization. Parents' beliefs have a significant effect upon their childrearing attitudes and behaviors (Super & Harkness, 1994), leading them to also be influential agents in their children's gender development (Ruble & Martin, 1998). This study explored how 22 Korean parents defined contemporary masculinity and femininity, how they developed gender microideologies that acknowledge both traditional Confucian gender ideology and Western egalitarian gender ideology, and why their gender-socialization practices with their children do not necessarily line up with their gender microideologies. Indepth interviews revealed that contemporary understandings of masculinity and femininity maintain some Confucian understandings of gender at the same time as being modified. An analysis of gender microideologies revealed four different orientations in the way that Korean parents understood masculinity and femininity in the context of their daily lived-reality and the larger sociocultural messages. Four types of gender microideologies were identified: traditional gender-differentiated microideology, crossover gender-differentiated microideology, transitional feminine gender microideology, and gender-neutral microideology. Although parents' gender views are an important part of defining their gender-socialization, this kind of consistency between parental gender microideologies and gender-socialization was not found in the ways parents talked about their gender-socialization processes. Four other influential factors on gender-socialization practices were found: (1) what parents perceive as social changes or social needs, (2) how parents' own experiences serve as conscious/unconscious influences, (3) how parents incorporate their spouse's gender-socialization practices into their own, and (4) how parents perceive a child's gender characteristics and sex. This study suggests that gender-socialization practices are not predetermined by parental gender attitudes, and contemporary Korean parents construct their understanding of gender in ways that differ from the traditional unidimensional notion of gender as a continuum between masculinity and femininity and the dichotomization of the specific social roles of men and women. This study also suggests that parental roles in gender-socialization process should be understood within social and cultural contexts by showing how parents construct their gender-socialization through their interaction with other social and/or individual influential factors as well as their own gender microideologies.
