The focus of the study was addressing the high burden of T2DM and glycated hemoglobin levels among African Americans. Notably, African Americans are more likely to have T2DM, which results in significant healthcare implications. Poor dietary habits among African Americans are more likely to perpetuate the problem of high glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels among African American adults with T2DM. Thus, an innovative intervention involving a nutrition smartphone app was implemented to reduce the HbA1c levels of African Americans with T2DM. The study was a pre-and-post study implemented within a metropolitan region of southern California. The study participants were African Americans and were recruited from a church facility. The intervention for the study was the Fooducate app, and the primary outcome was HbA1c levels. The study duration was twelve weeks, and participants were guided on using the Fooducate app for dietary guidance, caloric tracking, and making healthy food choices. There was a statistically significant decrease in HbA1c following the twelve-week intervention (t (29) = 3.985, p < .001). The findings support the implementation of the Fooducate app to assist African Americans with T2DM in achieving recommended HbA1c levels.
