Neoliberalism is an economic theory whose principles of individualism, competition, meritocracy, materialism, and consumerism have spread into all sociopolitical institutions, the media, and mainstream culture, and is speculated to have psychologically altered the everyday lives of ordinary people. Neoliberal ideology proposes that free-markets and self-interested profit maximization best achieves greater well-being for all people. Despite these claims, it is unknown how neoliberal ideology affects individuals' psychosocial well-being. The purpose of this study was to develop a theory of neoliberal dehumanization which hypothesized that people who internalize neoliberal ideology become more individualized and dehumanize others for self-interested outcomes which has negative effects on their psychosocial well-being. A nationwide sample of 400 American adults completed an online survey measuring neoliberal ideology, entitlement, greed, dehumanizing attitudes, social behavior, social well-being, stress, and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Survey responses were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The exact-fit hypothesis of the respecified model was not rejected, Satorra-Bentler scaled chi-square = 105.28, df = 89, p > 0.115, indicating the model has excellent fit. This was further supported by global fit indices, RMSEA-SB = .02, 90% CI [.015, .043], p > .99; CFI-SB = .99; SRMR = .03. Local fit indicates good-fit, with out of 136 standardized residuals, seven are significant. The coefficient of determination, .905, suggests the model explains 91% of the variance, with moderate to substantial effect sizes, ranging from .58 to .87. Results indicate that most Americans internalize neoliberal ideology, leading them to become self-interested, greedy, and entitled. Neoliberal ideology is associated with four types of dehumanization, suggesting individuals see others as objects to be used for personal gains, approach relationships as a means-ends strategy, and dehumanize others to raise their self-worth, and doing so increases their social well-being but has detrimental consequences for their psychological well-being.
