This was a dissertation which investigated the role of campus recreation, instructor-led, group exercise classes and undergraduate students' sense of belonging to their campus community. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between current and prior student participation in group exercise classes at a university campus recreation center and the student participant's sense of belonging to their campus community. A mixed methods approach was used which included a student questionnaire that was modeled from the 2016-2017 the National Association for Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) survey. The questionnaire was provided to all participants who were enrolled in instructor-led group exercise classes in the fall 2017 semester at Saint Louis University. The main findings of the study was the Ho1 (null hypothesis), there is no relationship between current student participation and students' sense of belonging, was rejected and the Ho2 (null hypothesis), there is no relationship between prior student participation and students' sense of belonging, was accepted based on the respective significance levels. Ho1 had a significance value of .00003. Ho2 had a .084 significance value. The second null hypothesis (Ho2), there is no relationship between prior participation in group exercise classes and the students' sense of belonging to their campus community was supported. The first null hypothesis (Ho1), there is no relationship between student participation in campus recreation group exercise classes and their level of sense of belonging to their campus community was rejected.
