The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived impact of coaches' servant leadership style on athletes' performance-based psychological variables. This research sought to determine the degree of association between athletes' perceptions of coaches' servant leadership and the athlete psychological profiles. The psychological profile that was examined is coping skills. The study looked at athletes in individual as well as team sports in Jamaica. A quantitative method was used to collect data through simple random sampling. Data was collected using three research questionnaires including: (a) the Servant Leadership Scale (SL-28), (b) the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28 (ACSI-28), and (c) the Demographic Questionnaire. A total of 60 participants who are athletes from track and field and football (soccer) clubs engaged in the research. The research was guided by three research questions that aimed to identify any differences in the coping skills of athletes coached by servant leaders in an individual compared to a team sport. The key finding was, that there are some similarities and differences in the perceived qualities of a servant leader in both individual and sports team settings. It was found that servant leader coaches, have a greater impact on mental coping skills of athletes in team sports, while they have a greater impact on the physical coping skills of individual sports athletes. Even though the differences were not significant between the individual and team sports athletes, the differences are important to the type of sport.
