The purpose of this study is to examine the first-hand experiences of siblings of lesbian women. The body of research for overall family adjustment to homosexuality far exceeds the limited attention extended to individual member and sub-system responses; however, evidence and basic insight into family role dynamics suggests that sibling-specific reactions do exist (Crosbie-Burnett et al., 1996; Green, 2004; Oswald, 2000; Savin-Williams, 1998; Strommen, 1989; Strommen, 1990). The limited empirical research on families' responses to having homosexual family members is almost exclusively filtered through gays' and lesbians' speculative descriptions of family member reactions. How does identifying as a sibling of a gay brother/lesbian sister affect one's sense-of-self and perceptions of roles and relationships within the family and society? The purpose of this study is to collect self-described experiences from siblings of lesbian women and to present the patterns and themes representing common emotions, cognitions, and behaviors extracted from their experiences. Twenty-two heterosexual siblings of lesbian women were guided through a two-part concept mapping process. Concept mapping employs a multidimensional scaling (MDS) procedure, producing spatial representations of relationships between participant-generated variables. Each variable, or data point, was a discrete aspect of the experience of having a lesbian sister. During the first part of this mixed methods design tactic, participants responded to textual prompts regarding their perspectives and experiences as siblings of lesbian women. In a follow-up session, each participant organized the compiled set of all respondents' session I response fragments into categories that most authentically conceptualized and captured their own experiences as a sibling of a lesbian sister. This study's siblings of lesbian women predominantly reflected on feelings of resignation and the meaning drawn from their experiences. They communicated a blend of optimism and loss, identifying overall themes of ambivalence, loss, and meaning within their relationships and roles within their families and society.
