This study investigated the home language use preference patterns and attitudes of bilingual Hispanic parents and their spouses in relation to the bilingual development of their children. In this study, ten families from Northern California were selected as participants. Each family had at least one bilingual Hispanic parent. Both husband and wife were interviewed if both were present in that family. Eighteen participants were interviewed through a research process called dialogic retrospection. Each participant answered approximately ten questions regarding Spanish home language use. A follow-up interview was conducted two weeks after the initial interview was given. The consistency of responses and any changes in the thought processes were noted throughout the dialogic process. The following research questions were addressed in this study; What are the home language use patterns of these families? What factors contribute to each parent's attitudes towards home language use? What are the parent's strategies for developing bilingualism in their children? To what extent do parents actually control their children's language use? To what extent do the parent's attitudes and experiences regarding Spanish home language use foster or hinder their children's bilingual development? What questions do these parents have regarding Spanish home language use with their children? Does the parent's thinking change through the dialogic retrospection process regarding Spanish home language use with their children? How, or in what way? The results of this investigation suggest that for many of these bilingual Hispanic parents in this study, some experiences or attitudes definitely influenced their choice of home language use. Some parents experienced a renewed sense of purpose to develop bilingualism in their children. The participants assisted in developing the interview questions and also voiced a need for written strategies or guidelines for other bilingual Hispanic parents who may also have similar home language use concerns.
