Scholars have demonstrated that high-quality teacher-student relationships are essential for motivation (Csikszentmihalyi, 1975, 1996; Reeve, 2016; Ryan & Deci, 2017) and learning (Pianta, 1999; Wu et al., 2010; Sichivitsa, 2004) in elementary general music classrooms. This phenomenological case study examined Miss Taylor's, an elementary general music teacher in a large, urban school district, experience teaching and building relationships with her students when the Covid-19 pandemic forced her to use Modified Modes of Delivery (MMD). The research questions were: a) What were Miss Taylor's expressed beliefs about the role of relationships and belonging in the elementary music classroom? b) What were her perceptions of how MMD has impacted student-teacher interactions, belonging, and communication compared to past practice? c) How did she interact with her students using MMD, and how did she perceive these interactions? d) How did she feel about her ability to maintain relationships using MMD?Modified Modes of Delivery (MMD) are involuntary changes in how a teacher usually delivers instruction, including asynchronous, synchronous, and in-person learning. Miss Taylor believed she adapted her instruction by offering students "grace" on assignments, behaviors, student choices, and grades. In addition, she demonstrated the need for "flexibility" and differentiation of instruction regarding communication style, preference, and ability when using the three MMD. Further, her experience demonstrates that student emotional well-being may be more critical than state-mandated music concepts in some circumstances. As a result of teaching using MMD, Miss Taylor's felt a stronger desire to build relationships with her students when returning to in-person classes and create a "safe space for her students to learn about music.".
