Introduction:Clinically, chairside adjustment of ceramic restorations involves use of a diamond bur which subsequently roughens the surface followed by polishing to restore the surface smoothness. Various chairside polishing systems are available for polishing ceramics. These kits are specific to the ceramic type based on the manufacturer's instructions. The effect of interchanging polishing kits on the surface roughness of ceramics is however not clearMaterial and Methods:150 flat ceramic specimens were fabricated from IPS ZirCAD Prime, IPS E.max and Vitabloc Mark II. The specimens were adjusted and polished using either the proprietary polishing kit for the material or interchanged kits. The surface roughness was objectively assessed using AFM and profilometer. Subjective assessment of surface finish was performed using SEM and visual assessment by 3 independent examiners. Volumetric weight loss of each sample was measured before and after polishing using a digital microscale.Results:The zirconia polishing system produced surfaces with the lowest surface roughness regardless of the ceramic material. The polisher-ceramic combination was found to have a statistically significant effect on both Ra and RMS when the AFM was used (p=0.039 and 0.010 respectively). Visual assessment showed that majority of the samples were fell into the excellent-acceptable polish categoryConclusion:Within the limitations of this study it was concluded that the Zirconia polishing system used resulted in the lowest surface roughness values regardless of ceramic materials tested. The zirconia polishing systems also did not result in significant volumetric weight loss regardless of the ceramic material used.
