The purpose of the Action Research study was to improve the understanding of how quality student-teacher relationships can impact the engagement and learning of students in order to increase their performance in the classroom. Participants and data collected in Cycle One consisted of public school teachers, psychologists, and administrators who have expertise in interaction with students in the high school setting. Action steps were designed, implemented, and evaluated in Cycle Two to identify various methods of increasing teacher rapport with students. A cohort consisting of high school teachers met for four sessions over the course of multiple weeks to identify and explore various techniques of interacting with their students with the goal of increasing a sense of connectedness. Before implementing these techniques in the classroom, educators sought to identify what quality student-teacher relationships look like before exploring the actions which would lead to this result. The teachers then acted with intent in the hopes of fostering a greater sense of connectedness in their classroom. Educators provided critical feedback on how many students they were able to interact with, the quality of the interaction, and the methods used during the interaction. Results concluded that educators who reached out to students with an intention of building quality relationships through the defined method saw a distinct increase in student engagement where students were more attentive, involved, and expressed fewer negative behaviors. Implications for the organizations included providing the teachers with a toolbox of methods to strengthen rapport with their students, finding ways to leverage the rapport built to enable students to better succeed academically, and promoting a greater sense of job satisfaction from their teachers as they feel that they are making a greater impact in their students' lives.
