The purpose of this phenomenological study was to better understand the lived experience of Post 9/11 combat military Veterans who experienced chronic pain as a result of combat injury(s). In this study, chronic pain was operationalized as physical pain lasting for a minimum of 12 weeks or more that was incurred while serving in support of conflicts related to Post 9/11 military operations. Given the subjective nature of pain, it has consistently been a perplexing topic for both medical and mental health professionals that requires unique treatment approaches. Initiation of policy changes regarding the management of pain done by the VHA stated that Veterans who received primary care services for pain management had poorer self-rated health, greater utilization of healthcare resources, greater prevalence of health risk behaviors, weight concerns, lower social and physical activity, and greater ratings of affective distress (Kerns et al., 2011). A qualitative approach was selected as pain is a subjective experience that is difficult to quantify and study objectively. This research aimed to give a voice to participants and highlight their personal experiences and struggles through open-ended interview questions, with the ultimate aim of informing treatment approaches for chronic pain. A general phenomenological analysis approach was conducted to explore each participant's life in terms of their unique lived experience. Phenomenology brought these individual stories to life and allowed others to understand the person's worldview as they experienced it (Creswell, 2013). A total of ten participants completed the study. Emergent themes were identified and NVivo was used for word count analysis to assist with counting the number of themes for coding. A total of seven themes were used to encapsulate the stories of each participant, which included avoidance, activity level, co-occurring disorders, identity, stigma, deployment, resiliency factors, and access to treatment. Given the ongoing opioid crisis, it is imperative to continue to conduct research on chronic pain to apply more effective approaches for OEF/OIF Veterans.
