This is a comparative study on secondary school teachers in China and in the United States. It examines teacher talk about their life and work in the two national settings, and attempts to identify and compare their perceptions of and attitudes toward their profession. It is to explore what the differences and similarities are in teacher perceptions and attitudes in the two countries and what factors that contribute to their talk in similar and different ways. Field research was conducted from June 1987 to May 1989. Interviewed were 60 foreign language teachers and several school administrators from 10 secondary public schools of various status in the hierarchical school structures of each country, 3 in Beijing and 7 in Buffalo, New York. It is a qualitative study, with data collected by open-ended, semi-structured interviews. It is found that teachers in either countries are satisfied with their current socio-economic status and working conditions. Common concerns of all teachers include low social prestige, poor financial remuneration, heavy work load, and lack of advancement opportunities. However, the intensity of teacher feelings toward these and other issues are very different in the two national settings, with the Chinese teachers expressing much higher frustration and alienation than their U.S. counterparts. In addition, some issues are of major concerns for only one national group and not the other. Those phenomena are identified to be derived from the differences in the political, social and economic structures and policies in the two countries.
