Tactical decision-making is one of the most critical aspects of performance in sports that utilize complex perceptual-motor skills. Athletes and coaches are constantly searching for methods to develop this aspect of their game to improve their overall performance. Cognitive general imagery is one common strategy that can be used to enhance speed and accuracy in tactical decision-making. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to answer three questions: (1) What are the most effective strategies for performers to best use cognitive general imagery to enhance both the speed and accuracy of their tactical decision-making when performing perceptual-cognitive-motor skills?; (2) Why are these strategies most effective?; and (3) How, or if, the recommendations for cognitive general imagery strategies change with different situational factors such as the characteristics of the athlete or the nature of the task. In this systematic review, 22 research articles met the criteria to be included and evaluated. The research findings showed several emerging themes that focused on areas such as the characteristics of the performers, the nature of the task, and how well-learned the skills were to the subjects. One significant recommendation for practitioners is to develop an enhanced ability to assess the tactical knowledge and decision-making skills for of the athletes they are designing training programs for currently possess. Future research should emphasize refining imagery intervention strategies, improving measurement and assessment techniques, and conducting studies in more applied settings.
