Known as Iceland's first major composer, Sveinbjorn Sveinbjornsson was instrumental in putting his country on the musical map during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although he primarily composed choral works, he also wrote a variety of chamber works such as his Sonata for Violin and Piano in F major. In American music education we severely lack knowledge on music from Iceland. Sveinbjornsson created a national voice for his country, yet he is largely unknown in music history. This essay discusses Sveinbjornsson's life and work in addition to a new edition of his Sonata for Violin and Piano. Because of the lack of research on Sveinbjornsson's music, little is known about his music notation and how he interpreted different markings in musical scores. It is imperative that we better understand the works of not just Sveinbjornsson, but other unknown and lesser-known composers from Iceland. During Sveinbjornsson's lifetime, there was a disconnect between mainland Europe and the Nordic countries, with many Europeans often claiming music from Iceland sounded to "Northern." Sveinbjornsson tried to appeal to both sides of the aisle, producing music with elements of Icelandic culture, while maintaining traditional form and harmony that would have been heard by mainland Europeans at the time. Sonata for Violin and Piano in F major is an excellent example of this particular disjunct. A new edition of Sonata for Violin and Piano in F major and a narrative about Sveinbjornsson will help to include him in the music canon, and help Icelandic music past and present to continue to be recognized on a larger, international level.
