Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), 2021.
The study reevaluates the problem of Judas's various portraits in the Gospels by starting from the hypothesis that Judas's images in the synoptic Gospels are closely associated with the convention of traitors. This hypothesis, in a sense, seems to go contradicted to the modern trend of emphasizing the "ambiguity of Judas." However, having found that the traitor motif permeates ancient literature in diverse patterns, Judas's portrayals in the Gospels, despite discrepancies, conform to these patterns. Equipped with this pre-existing knowledge that functions as the extratextual repertoire, I reenter the narrative world with sensitivity to the reading effects in the encounters with various textual parameters. The results show that Judas is skillfully crafted in the synoptic narratives as a traitor with various narrative functions and rhetorical forces. In Mark's Gospel, the seemingly brief descriptions of Judas allow the readers to construct his personality as a conventional traitor. He was entitled to an important office and later shifted his loyalty from the hero to the enemies by taking bribes (greedy intention assumed). Finally, his destructive fate is implied. Matthew's and Luke's retellings make the implications hidden in Mark's recount into their respective narrative reality. In Matthew, Judas's character-space is larger than the other two with numerous speeches and details. While some details underscore his association with the outsiders rather than the insiders (e.g., his twice calls of "Rabbi"), others deflect the sin of the religious authorities and the innocence of Jesus (e.g., his remorse, confession, and suicide). In Luke, Judas's character-space is suppressed by other reliable characters (e.g., Jesus and Peter). There is no record of his sayings nor further details of the betrayal (even the kiss is minimized), except the satanic influence. The most detailed portrayal is his death in the narrator's recount. Hence, the minimal descriptions of Judas achieve the maximization of God's triumph through Jesus's salvific suffering and the church's ongoing ministry. Therefore, to restore Judas's mythicity is not merely to reconstruct the hypothetically historical reality of ambiguity but to recognize Judas as a character and the implied person existing between the narrative world and the readers in diverse contexts.
