The aim of this dissertation is to offer an epistemic ground, utilizing the scientific theology of Thomas F. Torrance, for the evangelical desire to know God in Christ through the exposition of Scripture. Torrance's epistemology and his economy of the divine Word expressed within his scientific theology help to articulate the importance of the preaching moment for the people of God as they seek to know him in a "kataphysic" way, encountering God through Christ as the Word. The dissertation begins with an articulation of the thesis of the work, as well as an accounting of its significance in chapter 1. Chapter 2 seeks to outline Torrance's scientific theology, focusing particularly on his arguments for kataphysic knowledge of God (knowledge that is grounded in the being of God). Particular attention is given here to Torrance's work on both the homoousion of Christ and the hypostatic union. Chapter 3 considers the formal applications of Torrance's epistemology, offering an accounting of his Christ-centered economy of the divine Word. Chapter 4 addresses Torrance's hermeneutic, exploring how Scripture, as the written Word, is used by God in the economy of the Word to facilitate kataphysic knowledge through the Son. In chapter 5, the effect of Torrance's epistemology and his doctrine of the Word on homiletics is considered. Preaching, as a responsive act of the people of God, is situated within the economy of the divine Word and its methodology is evaluated. Chapter 6 offers several concluding thoughts and opportunities for further research.
