The Doctor of Ministry project, "The Beyond We Search For: The Paschal Vigil at the Intersection of Youth Ministry and Liturgical Theology," claims that empowering and equipping youth for leadership of the Easter Vigil allows the church to nurture a deep congregational engagement in the mystery of God's ongoing story of salvation. Set in a mid-sized urban Presbyterian Church (USA) context, this work identifies several adolescent faith formation issues while examining how the church's liturgy, through a youth-led Easter Vigil, can speak to those concerns. The work of liturgical theologians and Christian formation scholars demonstrates how symbol, sacrament, story, space, and time all foster an environment where youth and adults experience an openness to divine encounter and, subsequently, go forth with lives affected by that encounter. Walking through both the long history of the Easter Vigil liturgical tradition and its development within the project's context over the course of six years sets up the findings drawn from the Descriptive Qualitative Analysis of the Human Subject Research from both adolescent and adult focus groups. The feedback received from both groups points toward an appreciation for the depth of liturgical engagement and the leadership of the youth group, as well as toward an expanded and meaningful experience of God, the risen Christ, and the Holy Spirit's presence in their lives. Long-term faith and Christian identity formation occurs through meaningful liturgical leadership and engagement, opportunities to explore ancient and modern symbols, a pedagogy of mystagogical catechesis, and the application of that formation to the needs of the world.
