AbstractA Comparative Analytical Framework for Evaluating Theological Inconsistencies between LXX and MT Ezekiel Resulting from Translation TechniqueIn recent years there has been a significant increase of scholarship on both the Hebrew and Septuagint texts of Ezekiel. Such work has been warranted by the antiquarian nature of the book with numerous questions lingering over its authorship, the homogeneity of the book, and the significant textual and lexical differences between MT and LXX. Indeed, the vast majority of the work has focused almost exclusively on the level of textual criticism, which has produced a plethora of important studies on difficult textual issues. However, far fewer studies have engaged the literary or theological aspects resulting from translation technique employed between the texts. There are several challenges to be found in a comparative study between LXX and MT Ezekiel. For one, LXX predates the introduction of MT by several hundred years. Further, it displays numerous textual variances and lexical differences with MT. And there are also exegetical differences in certain passages that point to theological inconsistencies. This invites a systematic comparison of LXX Ezekiel with MT Ezekiel whereby their Theological Consistency may be examined. That is, has translation technique in some way generated or allowed the introduction of theological inconsistencies between the Hebrew text and Septuagint Ezekiel? That is the purpose of this study-to determine to what extent the prophet's theological referent was preserved by translation technique. In order to conduct a comparative analysis in a systematic and methodological manner a comparative analytical framework is proposed. The framework is enabled by a process that incorporates a defined set of metadata tags in assigning levels of relationship between MT and LXX Ezekiel. A selected number of texts from the book of Ezekiel will be studied within the structure and parameters established by the Comparative Analytical Framework. These passages were selected based on their apparent textual differences. For the purposes of this study, MT Ezekiel is used as the basis for the Hebrew text according to the proto-Masoretic tradition and Septuagint Ezekiel is used as the object translation. This study does not purport to argue the influence of Septuagint Ezekiel on the construction of MT. Rather, it seeks to create a comparative platform between the two from which perceived theological inconsistencies might be examined. The Comparative Analytical Framework and its methodology provide an analysis between the two texts that looks for Textual Equivalence, Literary Alignment, and Theological Consistency. How well these terms and those of their subcategories are able to reflect the interrelation of the comparative texts is a natural outcome of the study. Modern approaches to literary analysis are also an important part of the study. The study will consider how repetition, parallelism, neologisms, word pairs, chiasms, intensification, and specificity, among others, have been affected by translation technique. Ultimately, the objective for each pair of texts analyzed is to determine whether the translator's translation technique preserved Theological Consistency between the texts. Analysis and observations concerning the resulting data conclude the study.
