From the writer's research and experience, hospitalized patients regularly seek God for support and desire access to spiritual, religious, and emotional care to cope. In the awareness of the importance of emotional and spiritual well-being in connection to healthcare, many medical institutions employ Clinical Chaplains to aid the hospitalized patient in religious and spiritual practices to help them find meaning and purpose in their medical crisis. However, meaning-making and purpose-finding can be challenging during times of medical crises and death.Studies have shown that receiving the Sacraments is a primary spiritual ritual for hospitalized patients because through them God's grace is preserved, increased, and renewed within the participant. This study will examine the administering of the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and the Anointing of the Sick, the most desired spiritual rituals for hospitalized Christian patients. However, for some Christian religions, notably Roman Catholicism, the administering of these sacraments is reserved for ordained Roman Catholic bishops, priests, and deacons. In cases when a bishop, priest, or deacon is not available, is it fitting for non-Roman Catholic chaplains to administer the sacraments? The writer will further explore the sacraments from a Roman Catholic perspective and seek out ways in which non-Roman Catholic chaplains grapple and approach this issue within health-related institutions.
