Adolescents are often considered a lost generation. They are considered impulsive, irrational, and always making the wrong decisions. Much is made of the fact that adolescents are leaving the church, not coming back, and thus the conclusion is made that they are leaving the faith all together. Unfortunately, much of this is true. They are all these things, but they are this way because that is how God created them to be. The developmental stage of adolescents is one of wonderment, exploration, and discovery. They are leaving the church, but the silver lining is that they are not leaving the faith. Adolescents are more spiritual than they seem, the issue is how do we engage them and tap into their spiritualness. This project sets out to experimentally discover if the use of liturgy can positively influence an adolescent's spiritual formation and discipleship to Jesus. Through a variety of readings, the project works through sources directly related to learning more about adolescents from a behavioral and spiritual developmental framework. Other readings add to the project by developing an understanding of the theological field of liturgical formation. Finally, using the information from the readings, the project engages a group of adolescents in a liturgical act while assessing and observing the effects of the engagement upon their spiritual formation.
