In this research project I wish to explore the changing representations of female protagonists in classical Islamic narratives in order to reveal Islamic ideas of female agency in the public sphere. The research is founded on a close analysis of Islamic narrative sources, including the Prophet's biography and raids (Sira and Mag̲h̲azi), Islamic biographical dictionaries (ṭabaḳat), Islamic tradition (ḥadit̲h̲), and Islamic historiography (ta'rikh). The studied sources are from the 9th to the 15th centuries. Narratives and anecdotes about three female companions of the Prophet - Umm Sulaym, Hind bt. Utba and Umm 'Umara - are analyzed in an effort to trace and identify variations in their representations. The research is premised on a methodological approach which treats the forms and contents of narratives as indicative of their writers' concerns, and hence may provide us with a longue duree perspective on the perceived role of women's social agency in medieval Muslim societies. Specifically, the research aims to shed light on the changing perceptions of women's social agency as apparent in the Islamic literature that was produced between the ninth and fifteenth centuries. The findings indicate that Muslim authors throughout the centuries, and across genres, did not oppose or downplayed in any way women's social agency. They did, however, aspired to determine or to frame the 'appropriate' form of women's agency, and for that purpose they tended to emphasize some aspects of agency, while downplaying other aspects. By way of generalization, it seems that whereas the early sources (the Sira and Mag̲h̲azi), tended to emphasize the politicalmilitary activity of these three female companions, later authors, writing in diverse genres (ṭabaḳat, ḥadit̲h̲, and even ta'rikh), tended to highlight the religious and social agency of the ṣaḥabiyyat. Surprisingly, this highlighting was achieved many times by introducing new details and new information about these 7th century figures. All in all, the thesis concludes that Muslim authors throughout the centuries saw fit to present exemplary feminine characters that shaped the imagination and the perceptions of generations of Muslims of both sexes.

520 $a בעבודה זו אני מבקשת לחקור את ייצוגן המשתנה של גיבורות נשיות מתקופת הנביא בנרטיבים אסלאמיים קלאסיים אשר הועלו על הכתב בין המאות ה-9 וה -15 .הנרטיבים מתמקדים בשלוש דמויות: אום סוליים, הנד בנת עתבה ואום עומארה. העיון בסיפורים אודות נשים אלה, נועד לחשוף את ייצוגים ספרותיים של סוכנות נשית במרחב הציבורי בקרב חברות מוסלמיות טרום מודרניות במזרח הקרוב. המחקר מבוסס על עיון מעמיק במקורות אסלאמיים, בהם הביוגרפיה השל הנביא )הסירה(, סיפורי הקרבות מתקופת הנביא )מע'אזי(, מילונים ביוגרפיים )טבקאת(, ספרות המסורת )חדית'( וחיבורים היסטוריוגרפיים )תא'ריח'( . המחקר נשען על גישה מתודולוגית המתייחסת לתכני המסורת והסיפורים ההיסטוריים ככאלה המשקפים את סדר יומם הרעיוני של מחבריהם. הנחת העבודה המונחת בבסיס המחקר הינה כי התחקות אחר ייצוגים ספרותיים של סוכנות נשית עשויה לשפוף אור על תפישות מגדר אשר רווחו בזמן העלאתם על הכתב.המחקר חושף כי הפעלת סוכנות נשית באופן שאתגר מוסכמות פטריארכליות זכתה ללגיטימציה בספרות האסלאמית כאשר זו שרתה סדר יום קהילתי רחב יותר. יחד עם זאת ניכר רצונם של מחברי הסיפורים ועורכיהם להגדיר את ולמסגר את גבולות הסוכנות הנשית באסלאם. על רקע זאת, הם ראו לנכון להדגיש היבטים מסוימים של סוכנות ובד בבד להתעלם, להדחיק או למזער היבטים אחרים. עדות לחשיבות ייצוגיהן בהקשרים חברתיים ניכרת מעצם העובדה ש שלוש הצחאביות ממשיכות להוות דמויות חשובות במסורת האסלאמית. סיפוריהן והמופתים שהציגו ממשיכים לזכות לתהודה עד עצם ימינו.
