This dissertation is composed of two essays which analyze of the impact of two educational policies on student outcomes. In the first chapter, I study the effects of student sorting along ability on educational performance. I exploit the fact that the competitive high school admission system in Romania leads to more sorting in towns with more high schools, conditional on town population. This means that high-scoring students attend schools with progressively better peers and potentially better teachers and other school resources in locations with more high schools. Using matched admission, graduation, teacher hiring and school expenditure records in Romania, I analyze the underlying channels through which sorting impacts school performance. The second chapter chapter focuses on a policy in Ontario, Canada, which reduced the high-school duration from five to four years. An analysis of the policy's effects on educational and labor market outcomes, as well as the underlying channels trough which the policy affected these outcomes is conducted.

Cette these est composee de deux essais qui analysent l'impact de deux reformes educatives sur les parcours academiques et des etudiants. Dans le premier chapitre, j'etudie les effets du tri des eleves selon leur habiletes sur les performances scolaires. J'exploite le fait que le systeme d'admission competitif dans les lycees en Roumanie conduit a un triage plus prononce dans les villes avec plus de lycees, meme dans les villes aux populations identiques. Cela signifie que les eleves qui obtiennent de meilleurs resultats frequentent des ecoles avec de meilleurs pairs et potentiellement de meilleurs enseignants et d'autres ressources scolaires dans les endroits avec plus d'ecoles secondaires. En utilisant des registres d'admission, de diplomation, d'embauche d'enseignants et de depenses scolaires en Roumanie, j'analyse les canaux sous-jacents par lesquels le tri des etudiants influe sur les performances scolaires. Le deuxieme chapitre se concentre sur une politique en Ontario, au Canada, qui a reduit la duree des etudes secondaires de cinq a quatre ans. Une analyse des effets de cette reforme sur les resultats de l'education et du marche du travail, ainsi que des canaux sous-jacents par lesquels la politique a affecte ces resultats est menee.
