Site-specific art installations are artworks intended and often designed for a specific space, which aid in the transformation of that space to a notable destination or place. The goal of this research is to explore this unique type of art in terms of locational patterning and placement within desert communities in Southern California. Due to the strong location-based aspect of this type of art along with its interconnectivity with the local culture, the space-to-place shift that site-specific art brings to the area leads to establishing pull factors for visitors as well as allowing for a centralized point of interest for local communities and tourism. This particular type of art begins to create a destination characteristic, local pride, area engagement, and in turn, regional stimulus. It also develops points of interest that may draw year-round visitors to local attractions and amenities in areas that may otherwise have seasonally dependent tourism economies. This research explores the development and changing identity of three regions where installation art is clustered: Yucca Valley, Coachella Valley, and Borrego Springs in Southern California. The specific areas of interest were mapped primarily through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, paired with satellite imagery interpretation to provide visual analysis, which then combine to create an interactive map interface through a web-based application. Creating a dynamic, engaging, and publicly accessible product brings a unique contribution to the intersection of site-specific art with geographic significance to the overall body of geographic thought and study. The results of this research can be used to model and predict effects of site-specific art installations in place over several decades, establishing a general knowledge base to inform development and planning efforts which seek to incorporate local art in thematic landscape designs. The forward thought for this compiled research is to create the basis of a living document for further studies to explore this phenomena in greater detail and with hopes to expand this concept to additional regions in the future.
