In the 1920s, the municipal government of New York City collaborated with scientists to conduct a series of noise surveys around the city, having endured decades of residents' complaints of excess noise. At the same time, artists were creating work by drawing on the same raw material. This study examines Joseph Stella's large-scale painting, The Voice of the City of New York Interpreted (1920-22) and Charles Sheeler and Paul Strand's film Manhatta (1921) alongside the public health campaign material produced by New York City's Noise Abatement Commission to understand the perceptual history of the city between the wars. Reading this study's objects as sound-reproduction artifacts that map the sounds of the city, this project proposes an art historical framework that situates the creators of these artifacts as human "transducers"-devices that receive sonic material, transform its physical properties, and render it legible for listening subjects. By tracing the audile elements of the public health campaign, film, and painting in tandem, this study relates the historical timbre of New York City during the 1920s.
