Background: Unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (USCP) is a clinical diagnosis associated with insult to the developing fetal or neonatal brain. Those with USCP often demonstrate hand-arm impairments that affect bimanual performance. Hand-Arm Bilateral Intensive Training (HABIT) and Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) are two interventions to address impaired bimanual performance. HABIT utilizes bimanual task training to address impairments to bimanual performance whereas CIMT utilizes restraint of the sound limb and intensive unimanual task training. Objectives: To determine if there is a preferred method between HABIT and CIMT at improving bimanual performance and quality of life for children with USCP. Results: A direct comparison of mean difference following HABIT or CIMT yielded a grand effect size of -0.03 in favor of CIMT for immediate post intervention assessment and 0.03 in favor of HABIT for greater than two months post intervention assessment for the Assisting Hands Assessment (AHA). Results of a direct comparison of mean difference for Canadian Occupational Performance Measure Performance and Satisfaction revealed a grand effect size of 0.33 and 0.03 respectively in a favor of HABIT. Conclusion: This meta-analysis did not identify a clear favorite at improving bimanual performance and quality of life.
