Each year in the United States, for every 1000 patients approximately 15 are seen in primary care for shoulder pain. These patients experience slow recovery and high recurrence rates, with approximately 40-50% reporting continued pain at 12 month follow ups. Myofascial trigger points are a common source of shoulder pain and disability that often goes undiagnosed and untreated. Dry needling is a new technique utilized by licensed clinicians and has been proven to effectively address these myofascial trigger points, but there is limited research. CIHNAL, PubMed, and Science Direct were all searched using the following search terms: "shoulder pain", "shoulder girdle pain", "dry needling", "trigger point needling", and "dry needling technique". Four studies were eligible for this meta-analysis based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The following outcome measures were used in this meta-analysis: pain and disability. Dry needling was proven to be a beneficial adjunct intervention to conventional physical therapy in decreasing pain and disability in adults with various shoulder girdle pathologies. Pain presented with heterogeneous results with a grand effect size of -0.26. Disability presented with heterogeneous results with a grand effect size of -0.67. Future research is needed to determine the long-term effects dry needling has on pain levels and disability in adults with shoulder girdle pathologies.
