To ensure that we do not raise global temperatures by more than 1.5C, global CO2 emissions need to decrease by 45% by 2030 and hit net zero by 2050 according to the IPCC 2018 report. The transportation sector is the most emitting sector of the United States economy, accounting for 29% of nationwide carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, followed by electricity production which accounts for 25% of emissions. My dissertation studies the economic and environmental trade-offs of reducing emissions in transportation and energy production in three essays. My first essay investigates the impact that carbon dioxide emissions has on an individual's choice in vehicle fuel type. While a battery electric vehicle (BEV) has no tailpipe emissions, the carbon dioxide emissions produced from driving a BEV varies across the US due to the difference in carbon intensity of electricity production. Using a discrete choice experiment, I analyze how the decision to purchase a conventional vehicle, a hybrid vehicle, and a BEV is impacted by changes in the amount of emissions produced to charge a BEV.My second essay explores how the risk of a battery failure in a BEV impacts the choice of renting or owning a BEV battery. The battery of an electric vehicle is the most expensive component and costs more than $10,000 and only lasts about 8 years. I explore consumer's preferences for renting a BEV battery or owning a BEV battery through a discrete choice experiment. My third chapter evaluates the economic impact of disappearing coal mining jobs on coal dependent counties in the Appalachian Mountain Region. Using a county level fixed effects model and synthetic control method, this paper evaluates average impacts and how the six most impacted counties fared after losses in coal mining jobs. I find that the impacts on median household income, unemployment rate, number of people employed, and labor force participation is highly heterogeneous.
