Problem: There is an increased number of reinjury rates after returning to sport post ACL reconstruction. Although data incorporating return to sport criteria already exist, the current criteria as they stand have shown to be unsuccessful markers to predict reinjury rates. Psychological readiness tools have shown to be good predictors of reinjury rates based on an individual's psychological readiness. There is lacking evidence of a return to sport criteria that incorporate both physical and psychological assessment tools in conjunction. Further research must be conducted incorporating both aspects.Purpose: Evaluate the combined use of physical and psychological assessment tools as a more suitable approach to prevent reinjury of primary ACL reconstruction after a 9-month period in adults ages 20-30 years old.Research Questions: Can the implementation of psychological readiness tests with the return to sport criteria reduce the reinjury rates in athletes who undergo primary ACL reconstruction? Methods: Patients who have ACL reconstruction at New York-Presbyterian will undergo extensive rehabilitation and must pass all the diagnostic criteria in order to return to sport. Patients will either receive physical assessments tests or combined use of both physical and psychological assessment tests to determine their readiness to RTP.Outcomes: Reinjury rates will be monitored in both groups to evaluate the efficacy of physical and psychological readiness tests to prevent reinjury. A chi-square test of independence will be used to compare both groups.Benefit: This study will help establish a new and improved return to sport criteria in order to reduce the number of primary ACL reinjury rates.
