ObjectiveThe purpose of this study is to understand college students' motivations for the use and discontinued use of fitness related technology (FRT) in relation to their physical activity behaviors.ParticipantsParticipants were undergraduate students (n=22) recruited through closed Facebook groups. Participants were eligible if they were between 18-24 (emerging adulthood) years and current or previous users of FRT for at least one month.MethodsQualitative descriptive design was used with semi-structured virtual interviews with college students. Results College students found FRT to be a helpful motivator, to help establish routines, provide them with additional social support, and impact goal setting. ConclusionsCollege students are using FRT, however, they still are not meeting the recommended physical activity guidelines. Best practice guidelines need to be established for the use of FRT and how to increase physical activity for this population.
