The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how youth club volleyball coaches describe the application and use of psychological skills training (PST) in youth athletes ages 12-18 years. In the southwest valley of Arizona. The findings of this study was based on the conceptual framework using the four primary psychological skills constructs: imagery, goal setting, self-talk, and relaxation. RQ1: How do youth club volleyball coaches describe the meaning of PST when working with youth athletes ages 12-18 years? RQ2: How do youth club volleyball coaches describe the application and use of PST when working with youth athletes ages 12-18 years? The two research questions were used to focus on what youth club volleyball coaches explicitly understand about PST when working with youth club volleyball athletes age 12-18 years. The research questions were also used to ascertain what youth club volleyball explicitly or implicitly understood about PST. The researcher hand-coded the data and used Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-step thematic analysis to organize and analyze the data. The following 10 themes emerged: understand the athlete's mind, performance execution, age of application, the role of coaches, limited understanding, a change in coaching culture, nonverbal behavior, verbal behavior, affect, and techniques and application. The results revealed that the participants utilized PST but had little to no understanding of the basic psychological skills constructs. The participants recognized the need to implement PST into their practice regimen.
