Episodic memory is an important neurocognitive system that allows us to create representations of past experiences consisting of contextual details such as time and place. Despite its dominance in every-day behavior, episodic memory is typically studied by using reductionist laboratory settings that lack ecological validity. Studies attempting to investigate episodic memory in naturalistic settings (real-life episodic memory) achieved greater ecological validity, yet sometimes at the expense of controllability. The current study focused on overcoming these shortcomings. For this purpose, I created a social experience (including three people) that enabled the investigation of real-life episodic memory in a controlled setting. Furthermore, I examined how active vs. passive participation in the social experience influences long-term memory. In order to keep track of the occurrences in the social situation, I used eye-tracking glasses that recorded visual and auditory information, providing us with pupillometry information. Participants wore the glasses throughout the social situation, which was set up as an interview. During the interview, they were partly active (asked the interviewee questions from a written questionnaire) and partly passive (listened to the experimenter interviewing the interviewee). Subsequently, they conducted a standard episodic mini-event encoding experiment and returned to the lab a week later for memory tests. Our hypothesis was that memory for the social event will be superior to that of the mini-event after a week. The results indicate that indeed memory for social information was immensely better than memory for the mini-event. Furthermore, memory performance was not influenced by participation (active\\passive), possibly due to a ceiling effect in memory performance for the social event. Eye-tracking patterns provided informative data regarding the occurrences throughout the social situation but we did not find a connection between them and memory performance. The usage of such real-life paradigms should enable the study of episodic memory with higher ecological validity. Continuing in the direction of this study, will contribute to the understanding of the behavioral and neuronal underpinnings of encoding and retrieval of real-life episodic memory and to distinguish them from other types of memory processes.

520 $a יכרון אפיזודי הינו מערכת נוירו-קוגניטיבית חשובה המאפשרת לנו לייצג חוויות עבר אשר מכילים פרטים קונטקסטואליים כגון זמן ומקום. למרות הדומיננטיות שלו בהתנהגות יום יומית, זיכרון אפיזודי נחקר בדרך כלל על ידי פרדיגמות מעבדתיות מצומצמות ללא תוקף אקולוגי. מחקרים אשר מנסים לחקור זיכרון אפיזודי בסביבה הטבעית שלו )זיכרון אפיזודי מהחיים האמיתיים( אכן מצליחים להשיג תוקף אקולוגי טוב יותר, אך לעיתים על חשבון סביבה מבוקרת. המחקר הנוכחי מתמקד בהתגברות על חסרונות אלה. למען מטרה זו, יצרתי סיטואציה חברתית )אשר כללה שלושה אנשים( ובחנתי איך השתתפות אקטיבית מול פאסיבית בסיטואציה החברתית משפיעה על זיכרון לטווח ארוך של מידע מהאירוע. על מנת לעקוב ולנטר אחר המתרחש בסיטואציה, השתמשתי במשקפיים למעקב עיניים שהקליטו מידע חזותי ושמיעתי וסיפקו לנו מידע על האישונים. הנבדקים הרכיבו את המשקפיים במהלך הסיטואציה החברתית שנערכה כראיון. בחלק מהראיון הם היו אקטיביים, היינו, שאלו את המרואיין שאלות מתוך שאלון מובנה שניתן להם, ובחלק היו פאסיביים - הקשיבו לחוקרת מראיינת את המרואיינת. לאחר מכן, הם ביצעו קידוד של מיני-אירוע סטנדרטי )תמונות( וחזרו למעבדה לאחר שבוע למבחני זיכרון. ההיפותזה שלנו הייתה שזיכרון מאירוע חברתי יהיה טוב יותר מזיכרון של מיני-אירוע לאחר שבוע. התוצאות מעידות כי אכן, זיכרון ארוך-טווח למידע חברתי היה טוב לאין ערוך מזיכרון של מיני-אירוע. בנוסף, הזיכרון לא הושפע מהשתתפות הנבדקים בסיטואציה )אקטיבית/פאסיבית(, וייתכן כי תוצאה זו נבעה מאפקט תקרה של ביצועי הזיכרון לסיטואציה החברתית. דפוסי מעקב עיניים ייצגו באופן אינפורמטיבי את ההתרחשויות בסיטואציה החברתית, אך לא נמצא קשר ביניהם לבין ביצועי זיכרון. השימוש בפרדיגמות מסוג זה, אשר מחקות אירועים דומים להתרחשויות מהחיים האמיתיים, יאפשר המשך מחקר של זיכרון אפיזודי בעל תוקף אקולוגי גבוה יותר ממה שנהוג בתחום. המשך בכיוון המחקרי הנ"ל יתרום להבנה של היסודות ההתנהגותיים והנוירונליים של קידוד ושליפה של זיכרון אפיזודי מהחיים האמיתיים ולהבדלה שלהם מסוגים אחרים של תהליכי זיכרון.‪‪‪
