The purpose of this fully integrated mixed methods grounded theory study is to understand a growing trend, that of diversifying the representation of artists in collections of art museums and exemplars used in art education programs. Currently there is a gap in empirical analysis of the effects that this trend may have on the viewer. This gap is common to the museum field, the art education field, and the study of aesthetics. The research presented here used a grounded theory approach to uncover themes related to a theory on how the experience of aesthetic emotions may be impacted by knowledge about the artists' gender or racial identity in individuals who are viewing visual art in an art museum. This study will attempt to deepen understanding of affective dimensions of reception and engagement with art in the museum experience, and the degree to which the artist's identity shapes emotional response. This study will contribute to the literature by exploring how knowing the gender, racial, or international identity of an artist (may) impact the aesthetic experience of the viewer, with the goal of helping cultural institutions make informed decisions about if and how they will diversify their collections.
