In our lab, we study low dimensional materials, mainly focusing on charge density wave (CDW) states. CDW states are ubiquitous in condensed matter physics. However, the origin and properties of CDW states are not know fundamentally and much is still of debate. CDW states have gained attraction in recent years because of their coexisting nature with other charge states, likes superconductivity, magnetism, among others. In this dissertation, I will present work on the rare-earth tellurides family (TbTe3 and TbTe3) using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Also, I will present briefly our STM measurements on CDW compound (TaS2), BiS2-based superconductor (LaO0.54F0.46BiS2) and semiconductor (SnS2). In our STM studies of the quasi two dimensional CDW compound TbTe3, we observed unidirectional CDW state very much consistent in bulk measurements. However, across parts of the surface, we observed two spatially-separated, perpendicular unidirectional CDWs which is different than the bulk. Finally, we have also observed the region on the surface where two unidirectional perpendicular CDW coexists leading to a bidirectional order. Our analysis showed that surface Te layer is only weakly coupled to the bulk and our findings suggest that lattice strain variation drives the multiple CDW states we observed. We performed STM measurements on another CDW compound, CeTe2, which is comparatively less well-studied. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first group to study any rare-earth di-tellurides (RTe2) family using STM. In our measurements, we observe a unidirectional CDW state on the surface which is in contrast to a more complex CDW determined by bulk measurements. Fundamentally, we have determined that our STM measurements probe the physics contained in the surface Te layer. Our STM studies suggest that the observed CDWstates are driven by momentum dependent electron-phonon coupling rather than a Fermi surface nesting. In addition, we have studied a region where two unidirectional CDWs come together, an evolution induced by a sub-surface defect. Our detail works on this region showed that lattice strain variation drives the local CDW states.
