Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2020.
The purpose of this dissertation will be to show in what ways John Owen's theology of regeneration, the event or experience of which he deliberately described in realistic categories, in which something is infused into the believer which he did not have before, is both continuous and discontinuous with that of theologians of his own time and of previous eras. Specifically, this dissertation will show that Owen's understanding of regeneration bears more resemblance with theologians of his own time and of the Middle Ages than with the Reformers of the sixteenth century. In showing this, we make no assertion that the Reformed "fell away" from their Reforming primogenitors, based upon pre- or ill-conceived notions which more recent generations of theologians and historians entertained about the Reformers and their later codifiers; we only suggest that such a difference between the two groups is, indeed, the case. Moreover, we assert that the Reformed Orthodox theologians in England were more given to this realist understanding of the doctrine of regeneration than their Continental brethren at least through Owen's time. Chapter one introduces the topic and establishes the research problem and thesis, explains methodology, surveys related literature in the field, and presents the expected contributions of the work. Chapter two summarizes in detail Owen's realist understanding of regeneration based upon his own writings. Chapter three provides the background and context for Owen's day, philosophical and historical. Chapter four surveys representative theologians from the High and Early Reformed Orthodox eras, searching for those whose theology of regeneration employs similar "realist" terms as Owen. Chapter five surveys representative theologians from the Second Generation Reformers, the Reformers themselves, the Middle Ages, and the Ancient Church eras, searching for those whose theology of regeneration employs similar "realist" terms as Owen. Chapter six summarizes the work, presents the findings thus verifying the thesis, restates its contribution to the field, specifically for evangelicalism, and suggests avenues for further research.
