Anchored by theoretical frameworks specific to socialized masculinity and sexual orientation, the present investigation explored internalized homonegativity and appearance schema activation of muscularity-oriented body image disturbance amongst gay men in the military. Based on such relationships, in alignment with Beck's (1976) Cognitive Triad, it is deduced that there exists an interconnectedness between cognitive, behavioral, and affective aspects of body image disturbance within this population. The behavioral elements were explored via drive for muscularity per prior literature suggesting a heightened maladaptive perseveration on a muscular physique amongst gay men. The affective facet of body image disturbance was captured by assessing body dissatisfaction based on existing literature suggesting gay males' dissatisfaction with their physique secondary to appearance-related stimulus value within the gay male community and military alike. The sample consisted of 87 adult, self-identified gay male, active-duty military members. Participants were recruited via online advertisements on social media platforms and snowball sampling, and completed anonymous surveys exploring internalized homonegativity, appearance schemas, body dissatisfaction, drive for muscularity, and a demographic questionnaire. The hypotheses suggested that 1) internalized homonegativity and 2) appearance schema activation were significantly predictive of body image disturbance, and that 3) appearance schema activation was a significant moderator within the relationship between internalized homonegativity and body image disturbance variables. The results suggested that internalized homonegativity was significantly correlated with and predictive of drive for muscularity, but not body dissatisfaction. Appearance schema activation was also found to be significantly, positively correlated with and predictive of both drive for muscularity and body dissatisfaction. The moderation analyses suggested that appearance schema activation did significantly interact with internalized homonegativity; but did not demonstrate statistical significance as a moderator between internalized homonegativity and body image disturbance. Clinical implications pertaining to cognitive behavioral interventions and clinical competency specific to body image amongst gay men in the military are discussed. Limitations regarding sample characteristics of the present study were addressed, and future directions were suggested relative to considerations for using a more demographically diverse and older sample to reflect the temporal salience of the predicted effects within the context of LGB military legislature.
