Impacted by invasive species, biodiversity loss threatens mankind. Pomacea canaliculata, an apple snail, is amongst 100 of the world's worst invasive species. Invasive Pomacea species cause eutrophication and reduce biodiversity, diminishing ecosystem goods and services, while indirectly [negatively] affecting human well-being. This study aims to 1) define the trophic position and diet of apple snails in their native range (Maldonado, Uruguay) where they lack negative ecological impacts and 2) to compare corresponding data from non-native habitats (Hangzhou, China and Hawaii, USA) that have been invaded by Pomacea spp.Tissue samples were collected to confirm the identities of species, via genetic bar-coding, and diets, via stable isotope analyses, from five (5) collection sites. The resulting data have provided insights as to how diversity (evenness of species) influences the susceptibility of habitats to the adverse ecological impacts of apple snails.Linear regressions found that evenness explained 68% of the variation in the apple snail trophic level between sites and corresponding data on apple snail diets inferred using SIAR (Stable Isotope Analysis in R) demonstrate that apple snails shift from a broad generalist diet, consuming smaller proportions of multiple food resources, to specialist feeding on higher proportions of a subset of available food resources. These pronounced differences in feeding behavior provide insights into the mechanism by which invasive apple snails shift freshwater systems towards eutrophication.
